Chairman’s Blog November 2014
Last year we expanded our MONC NW Regional Finals to a three day “Opera Weekend” which included guest artists, a panel discussion as well as a master class with an illustrious master teacher. The response was enthusiastic and has inspired us to make this an annual event.
This year’s MONC Weekend is February 13-15, 2015. We are thrilled to have Frederica von Stade as our honorary guest and Alek Shrader, a MONC winner and Met tenor, starring in Seattle Opera’s Semele, as our guest artist. Aren Der Hacopian, Artistic Administrator, Seattle Opera, will join us for the panel discussion, and Ruth Falcon, a Metropolitan Opera soprano and acclaimed voice teacher will present this year’s master class. The Regional Final Audition will give us a chance to showcase young singers beginning their operatic careers in the beautiful setting of Benaroya Hall.
I am more convinced than ever that The Metropolitan Opera National Council has an important role to play in the future of opera in America. We are raising funds to discover and nourish the careers of opera’s future stars. And if you need proof that what we do works, just ask Renee Fleming, Lawrence Brownlee, Thomas Hampson, Susan Graham, Michael Fabiano, Anthony Kalil, Angela Meade, Nadine Sierra, Cyndia Seiden and Alek Shrader.
What do your gifts do?
1- Prize money for the singers is the major core of our mission. Voice lessons and coaching sessions which are the core of a singer’s training are very costly.
2- Venue and production costs for the audition. Presentation in a professional setting is extremely important.
3- Heighten and broaden the visibility of opera in the community with panel discussions and master classes for singers.
Although we are affiliated with the Metropolitan Opera, we receive no funding from them and are completely self-supporting.
Many of you have generously supported us in the past; we thank you and hope you will continue your interest and generosity. For those of you who attended any or all of our events for the first time last year, we hope we have inspired you and that we
will see you again.
Please consider a gift today. There is much more to do, not only for aspiring artists, but also for the future of opera itself. How much we accomplish depends on you.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
